Vigeland Sculpture Park

Vigeland Park is a unique sculpture park located in Oslo. Its creator is the famous Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland. This unique park holds the world's largest collection of art objects created by this great sculptor. Over two hundred sculptures made of granite, bronze or wrought iron are located on the vast open-air territory. Vigeland Sculpture Park is a part of Frogner Park.

Strolling through the park, you can see a lot of sculptural groups that convey an emotional variety of human relations. Many sculptures depict people captured by the sculptor during their pastime. They are dancing, fighting, running, hugging. Some sculptures are endowed with deep philosophical meaning. Such compositions are quite hard for human perception and make guests of the park think of the meaning and purpose of human existence.

The park is the result of a truly titanic work of the sculptor. For twenty years until his death, the sculptor had been working at the major exhibition of his life. All his works he donated the city of Oslo, whose residents still cherish the gift of their famous resident.

All sculptures are made life-size. Gustav Vigeland worked without the help of students or other artists, and only casting of bronze figures and stone carvings he committed the most talented sculptors.

The main gate is a big complex, which includes five large and two small gates. You can notice small houses with copper roofs topped with weather vanes next to the gates. The real decoration of the park is the bridge, about fifteen meters wide. It is decorated with exquisite lamps and amazing sculptures. Its construction lasted from 1925 to 1933. The opening of the bridge took place only in 1940, while the rest of the park has not yet been completed. 

Near the bridge is an unusual children's playground in the center of which is a kulptura unborn child, executed in a fetal position. Just a few meters away from you can see a small boat that docks to the granite pier. 

One of the most important sculptures of the park is the bronze fountain, produced in 1924. He is surrounded by two dozen bronze trees, symbolizing all stages of human life - from birth to death. Edging the fountain is also characterized by the eternal cycle of mortal existence. This composition was completed only in 1947 after the death of the great artist. 

The area near the fountain is paved with black and white granite mosaics, intricate lines which form a huge maze, a length of about three kilometers. At the highest point of the park flaunts a huge sculpture called Monolith. This granite block, which weighs more than a hundred tons, the efforts of three carvers for fourteen years, turned into an unusual composition of intertwined human bodies. 

Another attraction of the park is the sculpture of the Wheel of Life. It symbolizes eternity and is a unique garland, consisting of men, women and children. Do not forget about the creator of the park itself. Just about his death, he established his sculpture next to the main entrance. It Vigeland presented in the form of a simple wizard with a hammer and chisel in hand. 

Each visitor creates his own, special perception of exciting works of the sculptor. Each spectator in his own guesses meaning inherent in the sculptures, and sees what he saw in different ways: one - optimistic, others - pessimistic, but none of the guests of the park remains indifferent.
