Tønsberg Fortress (Tunsberg festning)
The Citadel, located in Tønsberg, was one of the biggest and most reliable defenses in all of Scandinavia. Its construction was started by King Haakon IV in the mid-13th century.
The Citadel was built of local stone, so the base of the walls of the fortress seem grown from an impregnable rock. The fortress was surrounded by huge towers, the remains of which can be seen today. Due to its strength and height of the citadel of the city served as a reliable protection, and on its walls rising straight out of the harbor of various goods.
After an epidemic of plague that swept across Europe in 1503 the citadel was destroyed and plundered by Swedish troops. Today, at the foot of the cliff a small museum, whose exhibits tell about the culture, lifestyle and traditions of the indigenous people of these places.
