Fredrikstad Fortress
Fredrikstad fortress was built on the orders of Danish King Frederick II in 1567. In appearance the castle was like a star and served as a reliable protection of the urban population from the attacks of the Swedish invaders.
Today the fortress is available to visit. Tourists can get to it through any of the seven gates. At the fortress is open Fredrikstad Museum, which contains unique exhibits on the history of the city. In addition, travelers can see the surviving buildings 18-19 centuries, and see five bastions of this famous citadel.
Get to Fredrikstad from Oslo by bus or train, the journey takes just over an hour.
